Learn from the Best…Without Any Cost

September 8th, 2009

Much of what I learned about Internet marketing I learned for free.  One of the most important things that I can do now, that I didn’t know how to do when I was starting is to locate useful, accurate information without any cost.  I used to be like most newcomers to Internet marketing who don’t even know how to find a free course about starting an online business.

Over the years, I’ve gradually shifted my business model from retailing (which I still do) to affiliate marketing.  I realize that in much of that time period I wasted a lot of money.  Now (a little late) I know that there are placed where there are valuable resources about how to become an affiliate marketer without any cost at all.  And that free information is much more valuable than almost any of the magic bullet product I bought.

Anik Singal reminded me of all that recently, as he prepares to launch his remarkable online “university,” Affiliate Classroom 2.  He just released a short free report that is a perfect example of the value that you can receive from honest experts simply by asking for it.

This free report for affiliate marketers is crunched into a mere 55 pages, but those pages are packed with “read and apply” tips that are of value even to old hands like me.  I’m not sure that I’m supposed to reveal too many of the details, but I’m going to pass along some details, anyway.

After some preliminary background information, Singal uses a case study approach.  He examines three sites that represent the basic approaches to affiliate marketing: a simple opt-in site, a blog site and a product review website.  Each of these sites had one major problem.  They weren’t earning any money (or not enough).  Sound familiar?

Singal allows us to sort of look over his shoulder as he examines each site, identifies major problems and then makes critical suggestions for specific improvements.  Despite my years of experience and my relative success as an affiliate marketer, I found a lot of his recommendations could be applied to some of my own sites.

In case you don’t know who Anik Singal is, you definitely should.  He was recently named one of Business Week Magazine’s four “young entrepreneurs of 2008.”

By the way, I’m not sure how long he’ll leave this report online.  I suspect that once the soon to launch Affiliate Classroom 2 sells out, he will take down the report.  If he does, I’ll share a few of his insights in a later article.

Part of My Affiliate Marketing Problem Is Fixed

September 4th, 2009

There are many places where we can read about an affiliate marketing business.  Unfortunately, it is much harder to find someone to do the actual difficult work for you.  Well, I may not have found that elusive source of free labor, but I have discovered what I think is the next best thing.

I do affiliate marketing, although I also sell my own information products and physical products.  My online business is made up of a number of traditional sites and blogs.  I am a firm supporter–make that “enthusiast”–of SEO for traffic generation, but that is a long term process; good search results take time to build.  For some of my affiliate marketing, I have tried PPC, but rarely have I had success over the long haul.

So, for me, as for all Internet marketers, traffic is a very challenging part of my business.  Especially difficult are those times when I have to pass on a new affiliate opportunity because none of my websites are optimized to bring in targeted traffic for the product, so I face the age old question:  How do I get the visitors to the vendor’s site with my embedded affiliate link?

My approach to directing traffic to the vendor’s site is just like many other affiliate marketers, I bring the visitors to my own site initially for an introduction to the product or, perhaps a comparison of competing products.  Then I just hope that I have been sufficiently convincing to get them to click the link that directs them to the vendor’s site so that I have some small chance of earning my commission.  I would like to make that process a bit less involved and take the prospects to the vendors a little more efficiently.

I use article marketing extensively for all of my sites.  I employ that strategy primarily for its SEO value but also for the direct visitors that are sent my way.  However, especially for an affiliate marketer, there are two major problems with traditional article marketing.  The first of those problems is that the top tier directories that publish and distribute articles do not allow links within the body of the article, contextual linking.  Instead the links stand alone in a section that they call the author’s resource box, but which screams, “Commercial!” to our readers.  Second, the major article directories do not allow affiliate links or even links to redirected pages or domains.

At last there is a content syndication service thall allows both contextual linking and inclusion of direct affiliate links.  Yes, you will be able to join the affiliate program of the amazing My Article Network once you become a member of the service.

My Article Network is something of a cooperative that brings site owners (publishers) together with article marketers.  (That link will let you know what I have to say about it on one of my sites.)  It’s another of those Callen projects that most of us who hang around online business for any period of time have come to know so well.

Since I am writing to and for the benefit of affiliate marketers, I’ll cut short the presell message and let sales page of My Article Network speak for itself.  I’ve been using it for less than two months, and I am a complete convert to the system.  I joined it for the article distribution, but I became so enthused that I set up four new blogs to take advantage of the free content in some of my niches.  {(Go ahead.  Click the link, you know you want to.)(Do it!  You know you want to click the link.  Come on…don’t you think I deserve it?}

Commission Ritual Review

August 5th, 2009
Comments Off

There was a famous bank robber in the U.S. in the 1920’s whose name was Willie Sutton. He was once asked why he robbed banks and is said to have replied, “Becaus that’s where the money is.”.

This famous quote describes  an irrefutable yet very simple principle that underlies a very slick way of making quick affiliate marketing money from the internet. This method is often called the Google Commission Ritual method, or sometimes the Leech method. and has been offered before as a quick way to make money online as an affiliate marketer by several online marketing experts.

The simple idea behind it is to specifically target an internet searcher precisely at the moment when he has selected what he wants to buy and he has his credit card at the ready.  It is proven way to  generate fast cash and recurring streams of passive income. If you know what you are doing, you can get a sniper site up and running in just an hour or so, and be making money in just days. Imagine putting up a site per day over a period of weeks to establish an ongoing stream of passive income.

However, like all things that sound too good to be true, the Google cash sniper technique, while it can be very effective, is not the easiest thing in the world to do successfully. You just need to have the knowlege of how and why it works, and to have the right tools and techniques at your disposal.

Because upwards of 99% of internet searches are not focused on actually buying anything, the essense of the cash sniper method is to focus your efforts very specifically on those who are actually in the buying mode.  It’s particularly important to target those who may have already decided exactly what they want to buy, but are at the point of looking for confirmation, a better deal or a better supplier.

Here is the way we generally do web searches:

  1. First, most people start by looking for general solutions to a problem or need
  2. Second, they go through the process of narrowing available choices to the best ones for them
  3. Third they are likely to make the final choice on what they need, which could be just information, or it may be an actual product they want to buy.
  4. At that point, they are probably seeking a last minute confirmation to give them the final impetus to make the purchase.

So, logic says, that you’d really like to somehow effectively intercept the ‘ready to buy’ customer at the final confirmation and buying step. In this way, you’ll be able to intercept, leech or snipe the opportunity to sell so long as you put a really good sales or conversion page in front of them.   So, sniping success requires these key elements:

  • A great money channel sniping target that is keyword specific
  • A place to snipe from, your top ranked website or blog
  • The weapon, your compelling conversion copy
  • The ammunition, your unique selling proposition

See Commission Ritual review for an example of a well constructed sniper site.

What Everyone Should Know About Affiliate Marketing – The Basics

August 2nd, 2009
Comments Off

Affiliate marketing is an internet-based form of marketing where the owner pays a fee to one of more affiliate websites for every transaction that comes to them due to the affiliate marketing.

While a good number of e-tailers fail to see affiliate marketing as a legitimate marketing strategy, affiliates do play an ever-increasing role in the marketing strategies of a great many online businesses.  In fact, many e-tailers have embraced affiliate marketing due to the fact that they only pay marketers if they themselves get paid.  Also, affiliate marketing often compliments the other more high-profile online marketing methods such as Social Networking, e-mail marketing and search engine marketing.

Here’s something for you to know, affiliate marketing has a greater impact when used alongside these other popular online advertising methods: organic search engine optimization, Google Adwords and social networking.  Sites that use Web 2.0 concepts, including blogging, user communities and RSS feeds have found success with integrating affiliate marketing practices in these areas as well.

The structure of affiliate marketing networks varies.  The majority are structured in a single tier and pay commission based on where a site sits within a predetermined hierarchy.  Two-tier programs also exist but are in the great minority.  Not to be confused with multi-level marketing (MLM) or network marketing programs which have more requirements in order to get paid a commission, affiliate marketing programs have few requirements for involvement.

As far as affiliate compensation, cost per sale (CPS) is the most favored method.  CPS works this way: if a customer clicks on a link to the merchant at the affiliate’s site and subsequently purchases goods or services from the merchant, the affiliate marketer gets a commission of the sale.  Previously used methods like cost per mile currently account for less than one percent of the affiliate marketing compensation methods being used today

Affiliate marketing is regulated internally by the marketplace and its most successful entrepreneurs.  Much like the early days of the internet or of civilization itself, affiliate marketers often operate as rogue and singular practitioners which might explain why there still is no overall standard operating procedure for affiliate marketers.

As a conclusion, affiliate marketing is still a great way for anyone who is interested in making money online. I personally know many successful marketers who are affiliates so there is no reason why you cannot do it.

Affiliate Marketers often use tools associated with Article Marketing because Unique Articles can create massive amounts of visitors to the affiliates blog websites.
